When you are looking for a cure for bad breath, you will have to examine the cause of the bad breath in order to treat it effectively. Bad breath is a common condition that affects one in four people and it is good to know that there is a cure and bad breath can be treated effectively.

There are many causes of bad breath including oral bacteria, foods, smoking, dentures, and dry mouth. Each of these different causes of bad breath will be related to either chronic or short-term bad breath. You can find a cure for bad breath for each of these conditions.

Oral Bacteria

Oral bacteria is a number one cause of chronic bad breath and can be eliminated through regular brushing and flossing of your teeth and regular brushing or scraping of your tongue. Oral bacterial lives in your mouth and seems to favour the tongue as one of its favorite hiding spots. You must dislodge food particles and plaque from your mouth so that bacteria cannot thrive in your mouth. When you adopt a regular brushing and flossing routine, you can eliminate oral bacteria and bad breath from your life.

Food Caused Bad Breath

Foods such as onions and garlic can cause short-term bad breath and it is recommended that you eat a sprig of parsley, cloves, fennel seeds or peppermint to mask the odour. The odour cannot be eliminated because it originates in your intestinal tract and you must wait a day for the odour to leave your body naturally.

Smoking Caused Bad Breath

Smoking causes chronic bad breath from the smell of the tobacco and because it leaves your gums and teeth prone to gum disease which causes bad breath. In order to prevent the risk of mouth and gum disease and bad breath caused by smoking, it is recommended that you quit smoking.

Dentures And Bad Breath

Dentures can cause chronic bad breath when the dentures are not cleaned regularly. Food particles can be caught in the appliances and unless the dentures are washed regularly, the food particles will help oral bacteria thrive in your mouth.

Dry Mouth Caused Bad Breath

Dry mouth is a condition that can cause short-term or chronic bad breath because moisture helps to clean the tissues of the mouth. If the mouth is too dry, bacteria cannot be moved away from the mouth. You can drink the recommended daily amount of water and juices to replenish the moisture in your mouth tissues and this will help to flush out oral bacteria. Brushing and flossing must be regularly maintained when a dry mouth condition is present to prevent bad breath.

If you want to find a cure for bad breath, you must match the remedy to the cause of the bad breath. When you have found a cure for bad breath that works for you, you will feel like it is a new beginning.

Do you have a stinky breath? Do you notice your friends and acquaintances trying to back off from you every time you speak? Well, bad breath or halitosis, as it is known medically, is a very common condition that affects millions of people. It is common and not something fatal, but bad breath can be a big turn off, the reason that many people are trying to find ways to totally cure it.

Curing bad breath is as easy as pie. Yes, that’s the truth. But, it is important to make sure that you are eager and ready to invest efforts and time for you to successfully prevent or cure it. Curing bad breath needs action, dedication and interest.

To begin, it is wise to consider oral hygiene. Oral hygiene, in fact, has long been considered as the first vital step to curing bad breath. So start by cleaning your mouth daily. Brush or clean your teeth, tongue and gums to eliminate the bad breath-causing bacteria. Scrape your tongue first thing in the morning and before bed. Apply a dental floss or wash your mouth with some kind of mouthwashes. This way, the decaying food particles and bacteria that cause bad breath can be eliminated.

However, when curing bad breath with a mouthwash, it is best to consider first if the mouthwash you are using contains antibacterial properties or is capable of neutralizing the volatile sulfur compounds. You can’t expect a mouthwash to work on its own for curing bad breath without these properties. In the first place, a mouthwash that is antibacterial can greatly play a part in curing bad breath as it helps to lessen the total number of anaerobic bacteria that are present in your mouth. And, since the volatile sulfur compounds are the primary cause of bad breath, it is best to find a treatment that is capable of neutralizing these bad breath-causing compounds. Note that if a mouthwash can help to minimize the concentration of these compounds, the more pleasant your breath will be.

Curing bad breath also involves knowledge about the foods that may trigger bad breath to occur. Yes, the type of foods you intake may be one of the biggest reasons for your bad breath. So it is best to watch out for what kind of food you eat. Among the most common bad breath-causing foods are high-fat foods, sugar, exotic spices, and some dairy products. Also, foods that are very high in acid can trigger the growth of bacteria in your mouth, and those that are high in protein and fat may not digest well and give off gas, causing bad breath in the long run. To prevent it, try to eat more fruits that contain digestive enzymes. According to some experts, vegetables can also help, especially the leafy green ones. And, if you want to see positive results, try to avoid excessive intake of beverages such as coffee and tea.

There are also other possible, effective ways for curing bad breath. Certain traditional and modern medications are out there for you to consider. Perhaps the best way for curing bad breath is to combine the traditional and modern techniques, and never to forget consulting a dentist about any of the available treatments before using it.

What is bad breath?

More than 20 million people are suffering from bad breath (chronic halitosis in medical terms). In most of the cases it starts due to problems in gums and tongue. Bacteria causes odour in the mouth and this occurred from the decomposed food particles and other debris in ones mouth and poor oral hygiene. The decay and debris create a sulphur compound, which causes an obnoxious odour.

Herbal cure of bad breath

Bad breath herbal remedy is prescribed by a number of doctors all over the world. Chronic halitosis can be caused by some medical conditions such as esophageal reflux and hiatal hernia; it may come from oral sources: cavities, gum diseases, and coatings on the tongue. The irregular surface of the tongue creates an ideal environment for bacteria to conceal and reproduce. A lot of people think that a bad breath herbal remedy is a superior, healthier form of treatment than other unnatural substances often used to treat the problem. Herbs are Nature’s medicine, so our body is better prepared to accept it. Herbs come from plants, which are found in nature. There is no side effect of this treatment therapy.

Herbs dealing with this disease

Parsley not only spices up our meals but it is also a bad breath remedy. Parsley is a natural bad breath remedy used by systematically chewing on the leaves. Other herbs and spices, which we can easily get in the kitchen, can be a natural bad breath remedy as well. For the unpredicted times when we may need a bad breath remedy, we should carry a small plastic baggie of cloves, fennel, or anise seeds to chew after odorous meals.

A bad breath herb treatment made of fresh coriander is a very effective remedy for bad breath. As far as the method to make medicine from coriander is concerned, it is very easy to don it. For it we are supposed to add few ounces of fresh coriander in two cups of water and then boil it for few minutes. After having our meals if we will drink dill tea it will refresh our breath. Making dill tea is also very easy. For it we have to mix one to two teaspoons of dill leaves or mashed seeds per cup of boiling water. Even simply chewing on a few dill seeds also freshen our breath.

There are many a people all over the world suffering from the universal disease of bad breath. Bad breath is responsible for the embarrassment and destroys relationships with family and friends. It may flatten your confidence and self esteem and may even cause severe depression. If you keep teeth, tongue, and mouth clean, you will not suffer from the problem of bad breath. You should take all care in cleaning your teeth by using proper toothbrush and adopting correct brushing technique. We should also follow the good oral hygiene rules.

Causes of bad breath

Bad breath may be due to a number of reasons such as bad dental hygiene, bacteria in mouth, infection, diabetes, drugs, gum disease, heavy metal accumulation, liver disease, smoking, sulfur, and tooth decay. Bad breath is due to anaerobic bacteria that live within the surface of the tongue and throat, that produce smelly sulfur compounds when they come in contact with proteins, which cause bad breath. Plaque on the tongue can cause bad breath where bacteria can grow. If you do not clean your mouth after consuming alcoholic drinks, tobacco chewing, cigarette smoking, and foods like onions, garlic, etc. it can contribute to bad breadth. A deficiency of vitamin B and/or zinc may also become the cause of your bad breath.

Cures for bad breath

One should brush your teeth in the morning, in the evening, and after every meal, especially after consuming milk products, fish and meat. One should also brush your tongue along with your teeth regularly. We should always wash the tongue with baking soda dissolved in warm water to reduce the acidity in your mouth making a less-friendly environment for the bacteria to grow. One should also brush and floss teeth regularly. Clean and replace your toothbrush regularly. One should also avoid mouthwashes with dyes and alcohol. Mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorine dioxide, sodium chlorite or zinc may serve as an antibacterial agent, which can control the number of anaerobic bacteria in mouth. Parsley, coriander, basil, rosemary, thyme, wintergreen, cardamom seeds, cinnamon bark, clove, fennel or anise seeds are great breath fresheners. One should duly chew any of the herbs slowly and allow the saliva to build up in your mouth. One should always rinse your mouth before sleeping with a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon added. The most important thing one should take care of is to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Bad breath can be caused by many things. Sometimes bad breath can be caused by medical conditions, but many times to cure bad breath you just have to step up your oral hygiene routine. If you don’t have a medical condition that is causing your bad breath, flossing and frequent brushing can help.

Why Do You Get Bad Breath?

The common cause of most bad breath is the waste product that is called volatile sulfur compounds. This is created by anaerobic bacteria in your mouth that is from the food that gets stuck between your teeth after eating. That is why it is so important to brush your teeth after every meal. This can go a long way to cure bad breath just by itself.

When you have leftover food stuck in your teeth it increases the amount of food available for the bacteria to grow. It also adds to the attractiveness of the environment where bacteria prefer to live. Those who are on a vegetarian style diet have less need to cure bad breath. The proteins that are in meat cause much of the bacteria to flourish in your mouth.

How Keeping Your Gums and Teeth Clean To Cure Bad Breath

The bacterium responsible for bad breath lives in the plaque that accumulates around, as well as on your teeth. It can also go below the gum line and cause problems that may need serious dental attention if you let it go too long. When you brush your teeth thoroughly numerous times a day, it gets rid of any bacteria that are lurking in your mouth and can help to cure bad breath. Flossing daily is also important. This helps to eliminate plaque and bacteria that have settled onto your teeth and below the line of your gums.

You need to keep in mind, to cure bad breath that is caused by bacteria, you need to cut off the food supply so that they cannot spread and take over your mouth. Flossing is a huge factor in keeping your breath clean and fresh. It can not be stressed enough how important this part of your dental routine is and should be.

The first thing you should do when you realize that foul odor is emanating from your mouth is to make an appointment with the dentist to have a complete and thorough cleaning. Once this is done, you can speak to the oral hygienist that is doing the cleaning for tips and advice to help to cure bad breath and keep your mouth as clean as when it is professionally done, every single day.

Ever been embarrassed in a crowd because of the unpleasant odor of your breath? Or have it made your esteem a little way lower and made you hesitant to talk and socialize with others? Those are just the outward initial effects of a person that has bad breath. Scientifically, bad breath is known as halitosis.

In theory, the human saliva has a distinct smell. However, this smell will change depending on the food eaten and the bacteria that triggers strong odor in the saliva. However, the smell if the saliva itself is not the one that causes for one to have bad breath. It is the bacteria that reside in the lining of the tongue or other parts of the mouth that causes a person to have bad breath.

But where do these bacteria came from? Ironically, the bacteria are by products of the food that are eaten by people. In a simple experiment, after a food is left unconsumed in the table, it will rotten over time. The bacteria are by-products of the rotten residues of the food that people ate. Because the human saliva has a digestive agent, the process of rotting of the food residues is even made faster.

The good thing is that halitosis is not a disease or a fatal illness. It is just a hygienic condition. However, when halitosis is not addressed and intervened properly, it can lead some complications in the mouth such as gum and throat problems among others. Aside from this implication, you might also lose some friends or you may become the talk of the town.

Because halitosis is purely hygienic problem in nature, the main thing a person can do to banish or solve this is by advocating cleanliness. Regular brushing of teeth is advised and also regular cleaning of the tongue and other parts of the mouth. When bad breath was not removed or goes back after some few hours try to have this simple home based interventions.

1.) Check for broken tooth – because the main residence of the bacteria are the places in the mouth that are not often cleaned by regular brushing, it is better to have the tooth be extracted or be bonded. For complete procedures you may ask your dentist about this.

2.)Consider mouth rinse – mouth rinse is very effective mouth cleansers. They are specifically formulated to target mouth bacteria that live even to the smallest place in the mouth. There are so many brands and flavors that you can choose from in the market for this product.

3.)Drink plenty of water – Aside from this will help you get rid of toxics from inside your body, this will also help you keep the mouth wet thereby increasing production of saliva and pushing down dirty saliva down the waste deposits of the body. More water can help you flush food residue out of your mouth down to your intestines thereby lowering your chances of having bad breath.

4.) Chew gum – this is a temporary intervention. Whenever you feel that your mouth is already dry and you do not have any access to water, you may opt to chew gum instead. Cinnamon flavored gums are said to have an odor control properties which helps eliminates bad breath. You may also choose spearmint and eucalyptus flavored gums.

5.) Quit smoking – studies showed that one of the effects of smoking is bad breath. This is because some nicotine and tar can accumulate in the lining of the tongues which can cause bad odor in the mouth.

Just remember that halitosis is not particularly a disease. The main thing here is cleanliness. This will surely keep bad breath away.

Some of the oral bacteria which create the waste products that are responsible for causing bad breath live in the dental plaque that accumulates on and around a person's teeth

Some of the oral bacteria which create the waste products that are responsible for causing bad breath live in the dental plaque that accumulates on and around a person’s teeth, both at and below the gum line. A methodical brushing and flossing technique is needed in order to remove this plaque and also remove any food debris that is left in the person’s mouth after eating that could be used as a food supply by these bacteria. One should take notice of the fact that we have used the term brushing and flossing here. It is not sensible to think that a mouth odor emanating from the areas around the teeth can be diminished unless flossing is an integral part of a person’s daily cleaning routine. Many people overlook cleaning their tongue, however, starting to do so in a regular basis can be the single most beneficial treatment for bad breath that a person can institute.

Tests that revealed truth

The tests have often revealed that the smell of the anterior portion of a person’s tongue is usually less offensive than the smell found emanating from the posterior part. The reason for this is related to the fact that the anterior portion of the tongue is somewhat self-cleansing and therefore less likely to harbor large numbers of odor producing bacteria. Many tongue functions require that the anterior portion of the tongue touches firmly against the hard palate. This friction produces a cleansing action, therefore preventing any significant bacterial accumulation.

Other methods of curing bad breath

The posterior portion of the tongue in comparison only rubs up against the palate relatively gently during tongue movements. This soft palate contact does not provide enough friction to produce any significant cleansing. For these reason it is typically the posterior aspect of the tongue that is found to harbor the bacteria that cause a person’s bad breath, and thus the posterior tongue is the most important area to clean. There are various methods you can use to clean the posterior portion of your tongue. Each of the techniques though has the same goal, to scrape away the bacteria and debris that have accumulated on your tongue’s surface. No matter whichever method of tongue cleaning one chooses to use, one should always try to clean as far back on your tongue as possible. One should not be surprised finding themselves having an active gag reflex. Gagging is a natural reaction, but with time this reflex should diminish.

The socially unacceptable notion of bad breath causes pause to many who find themselves in close proximity to others. Whether it is a social setting, in a school environment, or on the job, having bad breath is not acceptable and actually is one of the quickest ways of getting ostracized from a group of people, and of course the opposite sex. This in turn leads to severe self consciousness and while the self esteem takes a beating, the affected individual may attempt to purchase a variety of tinctures and drops guaranteed to neutralize bad breath and then freshen it.

Truth be told, a lot of these substances are ineffective, and the few that do work may be a double edged sword in that they also offer some health problems. This is especially true in the arena of holistic medicine, where some herbal concoctions may contain substances that may cause allergic reactions and even produce undesired side effects, such as heart palpitations.

If your bad breath is due to poor oral hygiene – most commonly this refers to the failure to brush your teeth twice a day, floss, and use an oral rinse – there is precious little that can be done about it until you decide to change the way you go about caring for your mouth. Should there be gum disease or similar underlying causes for the bad breath, these two cannot be masked away and only a visit to the dentist and the dental hygienist can make this kind of dragon breath go away.

On the other hand, if you are a regular in your dentist’s chair, and if you practice proper oral hygiene at home, the presence of bad breath may be directly influenced by what you eat or drink.

* Onions and garlic should be avoided prior to a social engagement, since they will permeate the breath not only from the mouth but also the pores.

* Stay away from curried foods; these add a scent component to your breath that is hard to overcome, even if you were to brush your teeth immediately after eating.

* Fish is a mixed blessing; salmon is not a typical offender but tuna does seem to stick around and make the breath rather smelly. Choose your lunch carefully!

* Order an extra lemon wedge with your water. After finishing your meal, finish your water and then suck on the lemon wedge, swishing the juice around in your mouth for a few seconds. This little act has the power to act as a powerful bacteria inhibitor and you may greatly curtail the presence of bad breath.

* Ask for an extra sprig of parsley or mint with your meal. Both are rich in chlorophyll, a natural chemical that has been known to act as an odor neutralizer. In addition, mint contains essential oils that provide a sweet scent to your breath. Surprise your waiter and actually eat the garnish! Chew it well, and then swish the saliva through your mouth before swallowing.

* Eat an apple or a carrot. These foods are hard and scrape away bacteria that cause odors in your mouth. Ice cubes, to a lesser extent, accomplish the same thing, but because they wreak havoc on most dental work, this is not recommended.

You wouldn’t want to be suffering from embarrassment caused by having bad breath, right? Well, we all do. And that’s why we always want to make sure that our breath is fresh and our mouth is always clean. Yeah, proper oral hygiene is the key to keeping bad breath at bay. But, guess what? Just merely having an oral regimen is not enough to fight off anaerobic bacteria. You need to have proper knowledge of this condition so you’ll know exactly what to do whenever bad breath strikes. Yes, bad breath disease can strike from time to time. And it’s what you should be prepared for.

The first thing that you need is know what bad breath disease really is. There are lots of resources out there where you can find complete information about halitosis, or what commonly known as bad breath. You can search the internet, read some books and magazines about oral health or you can go directly to your dentist and ask about it. And along with finding information about bad breath, you will also learn about the different things that may cause bad breath.

So what are the culprits? Here are some:

* Tooth Decay – if one or two of your teeth have decay, you can expect to have unpleasant breath odor.

* Periodontal Disease – also known as gum disease; if you have any problem with your gums, you are most likely to have bad breath

* Plaque – when you have plaque or even some food particles between your teeth, there is a high risk that you will have bad breath

* Dry Mouth – we need saliva to wash out the foods in our mouth but if you have dry mouth,

these food particles will remain there and cause unpleasant odor

* Tonsil or Throat Infection – some problems in the throat are also known to cause bad breath

If you are already suspecting that you have bad breath, it is better that you really consult a dentist. Your dentist will know what steps to take to solve your problem. Usually, a prophylaxis will be performed to see if dental plaque or food stagnation is the cause of bad breath. Now, in case there is no oral cause identified, you may need to visit other clinics that specialize in breath odor problems. Or maybe, you are just being too conscious about your breath and the problem is psychological.

But, you know what? Having a fresher breath actually depends on your oral hygiene and how you take care of yourself. The following are some of the things that you can do to keep your breath always smelling good;

* Don’t just brush – plain brushing is not enough to clean the teeth and mouth; in addition, you need to floss or other special brushes as per your dentist’s recommendation to make sure that hard-to-reach areas in the mouth are also cleaned thoroughly.

* Clean the tongue – dental experts recommend that you use tongue cleaners to clean your tongue up to the back areas since this is where odor-causing bacteria live.

* Mouthwash it – before sleeping or each time you can’t brush after meal, it is advisable to use mouthwash.

* Proper diet – eating fresh and fibrous vegetables will help you maintain clean mouth all the time. Avoiding too much coffee will also help.

* Drink more water – drinking lots of water will help your body produce more saliva which is needed to flush the food particles in the mouth.

Since the most common cause of bad breath is the odorous waste product created by anaerobic oral bacteria, the most important step a person can take toward improving the quality of their breath is to clean their mouth in a manner that helps to minimize the amount of food available for these bacteria, minimize the total number of these bacteria that exist, minimize the availability of the types of environments in which these bacteria prefer to live, make any environment in which these bacteria do live less hospitable.

Minimizing the food supply for bacteria that cause bad breath

The volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad breath are created as a waste product by anaerobic oral bacteria when they digest proteins. This would imply that those persons who maintain a vegetarian diet would most likely have fewer chronic breath problems than those people who have diets that are high in protein rich foods such as meat. It is important for a person to clean their mouth thoroughly after eating, and especially after eating foods that are high in protein content. This is because even after we have finished meal minute particles of food still remain in our mouth. Much of this food debris ends up lodged between our teeth and incorporated into the coating found on the posterior part of our tongue. Since these are precisely the same locations in which the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath live, if a person does not clean their mouth thoroughly a food supply is provided for these bacteria over an extended period of time.

Take proper care of the teethes

Of the oral bacteria that create the waste products that are responsible for causing bad breath live in the dental plaque that accumulates on and around a person’s teeth, both at and below the gum line. A thorough brushing and flossing technique is needed in order to remove this plaque and also remove any food debris that is left in the person’s mouth after eating that could be used as a food supply by these bacteria. Take notice of the fact that we have used the term brushing and flossing here. It is not realistic to think that a mouth odor emanating from the areas around the teeth can be diminished unless flossing is an integral part of a person’s daily cleaning routine.
